Mallory followed Ismet and Meadowlark, wielding flashlights, their only way to penetrate deeper into the fairy spires without stumbling over volcanic rocks or stepping into rodent burrows. She moved briskly, still holding Ismet’s pistol. It felt the same as the Beretta that McKenzie had given her in Nevada, but still...a gun was a gun. Christ, why was she carrying a gun anyway? She wasn’t trained for this kind of crap. What had turned from a search for Katie had become a deadly nightmare. At least the vehicles could not reach them. The intermittent stands of junipers, spires, and hoodoos gave them protection. The terrain became rougher, and the smell of gunpowder dissipated the closer they got to the gorge.

Meadowlark insisted he knew the area like the back of his hand. It was questionable whether their assailants were as familiar. He was confident in his plan, or so she hoped; otherwise, they were going to end up with their backs against the gorge surrounded by their pursuers. She had to trust him, but another question raised its ugly head.

Why was Katie involved with these men?

If Meadowlark and Ismet were intent on blowing up a major asset held by Möbius, from all accounts, Katie was involved as an accessory. The implication she could be considered a terrorist frightened the hell out of Mallory. Katie’s relationship with Ismet was deeper than she thought.

Now Mallory herself was involved with the two men who would be responsible for the dam’s demise. If the gunmen didn’t finish her off, would Turkish authorities jail her and throw away the key? Spending the rest of her life in a Turkish prison was too frightening to consider. In what had become a continuing nightmare, she was caught up in a hopeless loop of changing circumstances. What was it that drove Meadowlark to want to destroy a dam he had worked to develop and build? Why the change of heart? These questions deserved an answer, but first, they had to get Katie out of harm’s way.

Meadowlark stopped, the flashlight out in front, beams penetrating the gloom of air over space. They were at the edge of the gorge. Mallory could feel the tension. The emptiness ahead was not only horizontal, but vertical as well—a cold, hollow feeling of blackness. She backed away, her leg muscles slow to process commands. A shapeless glow rose above the hills to the south. “The moon will rise in an hour.” Meadowlark said. “That could help us a little, but no time to wait.” He turned and motioned Ismet. “The cache box is ten minutes to the west. You can get there faster than the rest of us. We’ll wait until you return.”

Ismet nodded.

“A cache box?” Mallory asked.

“In this business; one must be prepared. We’ve been on the run from Möbius for over a month. The cache box provides another safety net—rappelling gear. If we can reach the river, we can elude these maniacs.”

Ismet disappeared into the night without a word.

Meadowlark turned his attention to Mallory.
